Hello everyone,
My name is Alma Perez. I was a teacher for 7 years and became a school counselor . I recently went to the CASC conference in Riverside, CA and was inspired to reflect on my path in education. Why am I still here in counseling, what is my purpose? This is the question that I keep thinking about especially during these hard times. Don’t get me wrong, being an educator is always stressful, busy and there is always something new going on, but recently it has been extremely difficult. I find myself asking what is my purpose. I am an extreme believer that I am where I need to be and I will be guided to where I need to be. Sharing the experience as the CASC conference with fellow counselors made me appreciate the work that we do. We may be at elementary, middle, high school, alternative schools, but we all face difficult challenges and we still persevere to help our students.
Why am I in school counseling, what is my purpose?
Despite the difficulties of this profession I find my passion is to help prepare students to get options. Options that my brothers and friends in my neighborhood growing up never had. They never had the wealth of information of how to become financially independent. Options also provide flexiblility when we face harships. When my brother passed away, I was able to take time off from work, seek affordable mental health services and other resources during this hard time. Financially, because of the stable salary I was not affected in that sense but it allowed me to help with funeral services. This flexiblity is needed for all individuals.
